Surprises in Spain

The unanticipated blend of the rich beauty of old, intwined with the innovative architecture of the new, was only the first of many surprises the stunning city of Valencia, Spain, had in store for us.

“The best way to challenge your preconceptions is to simply go out there and challenge them.” – T. David Rush

It is difficult to tear ourselves away from the savoury life of France, however the promise of warmer February temperatures and the allure of exploring a new country moved us on to the beautiful city of Valencia, Spain, with every intention of carrying forward our desire to savour on a budget.

Valencia promised a peek into the Spanish culture and her people, delivering a wonderland of educational opportunities for our family of world-schoolers at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (the City of Arts and Sciences) and Valencia’s Bioparc, one of the most impressive zoos we have ever experienced.

Valencia wields a deftly effective contrast between ancient and modern architecture, old traditions blending with cutting edge exhibits, offering us an exciting a breadth of experiences.

However, among some of the more eye-opening experiences, Spain revealed much of our own internal misconceptions of the country, its people and the food. This offered powerful personal lessons and helped us align with how we truly want to live and what we are willing to tolerate.

Better still, even leveraging the budding promise of our children’s informal Spanish lessons, and years of Dora the Explorer, couldn’t save us from more than a few interesting and hilarious tales that we look forward to sharing with you below.
