We had all the “stuff.” What we wanted was more time.
Have you ever asked the question: Where is the time going?
We did.
These ten feet belong to us, a family of five who wondered if the way we were spending our time, living the scripted dream, was truly making us happy. Join us on our search to answer this and many other big questions.
What kind of father uproots his family to travel the world?
What kind of woman is okay with selling her forever-home, along with anything else that won’t fit in a twenty-one-inch by nine-inch TravelMate carry-on, to travel the world no less?
How many kids would leave their friends, toys, school, everything they know behind?
Many people think about it, but who would actually do it?
Well, we would. Crazy, right? But for the first time in a very long time life makes more sense now.
Truth be told, we have a good life. From all measures, we have achieved society’s scripted goals: the estate home, thriving businesses and successful careers, the three cars, good schools, cute little dog and a happy family. But as happy as our family is, we are still apart too much of the time. Dad, in an office tower downtown, Mom working from her home office, while the kids spend their days in their respective schools … and these are some of the most precious years our family will have together, and time away is slipping by.
“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” – Maria Robinson
Sure, we can buy another car, go on a vacation or look at building that cabin; but for what? Of course, all these things make us happy … but it’s only for a little while, then it’s just more stuff to manage. What we really want right now is to spend more time together, and make that time count. We have been blessed with wonderful, polite, inquisitive kids who get along, for the most part, and share their parent’s desire for growth, exploration and a helluva lot of fun.
“F**k it. It’s time to shake things up!” – Daddy
So I say, let’s use this time we have together and choose to really live life. We followed the script, we made it happen; now it’s time for us to shake things up a bit and redefine who we are and how we choose to live. Significant change often requires a major jolt; thankfully this one is self-induced and stepping away from everything we know is as good a start as any.
